🗣️ At the United Nations this week, a Chinese diplomat made a powerful plea for stability in a region that’s been on the edge. With conflicts threatening global peace and energy markets, the call couldn't be more timely.
Fu Cong, China’s permanent representative to the UN, described the Middle East situation as being at a critical ‘window of peace’—a pivotal moment to shift from war to lasting calm. He urged all parties to show restraint and sincerity to prevent backsliding on ceasefire efforts. 🌍
“The current situation stands at a critical stage of transition from war to peace,” Fu told a Security Council debate, stressing that restoring stability in the Middle East and the Gulf region is urgent for everyone.
🚨 The Heart of the Matter
Fu was clear: the Palestinian question is central and must not be pushed to the sidelines. He called for a full and durable ceasefire in Gaza, urging Israel to abide by international law and remove barriers to humanitarian aid. He also strongly criticized ongoing settlement activities, calling them illegal and a major roadblock to peace.
“Prolonging the illegal occupation will not make either party feel safer. Rather, it will intensify a vicious cycle,” he warned.
🕊️ The Two-State Solution: The Only Way Forward
Amid concerning voices from within Israel opposing a Palestinian state, Fu reaffirmed that the two-state solution is the only viable path. He called for increased international support to establish a sovereign Palestinian state based on the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
China pledged to continue working with the global community to end the suffering of the Palestinian people and achieve a just, lasting peace. It’s a complex puzzle, but one the world can’t afford to ignore.
