Trump Signs New AI Order: Government Gets a 30-Day Sneak Peek! 🤖

AI Safety or Speed Bump? 🚀

Things are heating up in the world of artificial intelligence! US President Donald Trump has just signed an executive order that gives the government a "first look" at the most powerful AI models before they hit the public. 🛡️

Here is the tea: companies like OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic will now voluntarily share their advanced models with the government for up to 30 days before their official release. This isn't just about curiosity—it's about security. The move was sparked by concerns over Anthropic's Mythos model, which is so powerful it could potentially expose vulnerabilities in banks, hospitals, and government systems. Yikes! 😱

The Great Compromise 🤝

Getting to that 30-day window wasn't easy. The original plan was 90 days, but tech giants pushed for just 14. In the end, they met in the middle. Kent Walker from Google called it an "important step forward" to ensure defenders have the tools they need to keep the country secure.

Innovation vs. Regulation ⚡

But not everyone is cheering. David Sacks, the AI and crypto czar, reportedly warned the president that too much regulation could slow down innovation. Sacks believes that to win the AI race against the Chinese mainland, the US needs to clear away "bureaucratic hurdles" rather than adding new ones. 📉

As part of the order, the Treasury, NSA, and CISA are teaming up to form an "AI cybersecurity clearinghouse" to identify software vulnerabilities and fix them in collaboration with industry leaders.

Global Vibes: US vs. EU 🌍

Compared to the European Union's AI Act, which entered into force in 2024 and sets binding rules for high-risk systems, the US approach remains largely voluntary. While some experts, like Anthony Aguirre from the Future of Life Institute, call this a step in the right direction, they argue that voluntary frameworks aren't enough and the government should be able to block systems that pose unacceptable national security risks. 🛑

Whether this keeps us safe or slows us down, one thing is clear: the AI race is moving faster than ever! 💻✨
