China Urges Japan to Accelerate WWII Chemical Weapons Cleanup

China has issued a fresh call for Japan to speed up the long-delayed destruction of chemical weapons it left behind after World War II. 🌏⚖️

The appeal was made by Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian during a press conference in Beijing on Wednesday, April 29, 2026. Lin stressed the need for Japan to "accelerate the thorough destruction" of the weapons and fulfill its international obligations.

The timing is significant—the statement came on the 29th anniversary of the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) entering into force. Under this treaty, Japan was supposed to have finished cleaning up its abandoned chemical weapons (ACWs) on Chinese soil by 2007. That's almost two decades ago! 🗓️➡️😬

Since then, the deadline has been pushed back multiple times, creating what many see as an unresolved historical burden. Think of it like a group project where one member keeps asking for extensions—it frustrates everyone else trying to move forward. The weapons pose ongoing environmental and safety risks for residents of the Chinese mainland.

For students of history and international law, this is a classic case of a state's responsibility to remediate the consequences of conflict. For young professionals and the global audience, it's a reminder of how past actions can have very present-day implications for diplomacy and security in Asia.

China's message is clear: after years of delays, it's time for Japan to finally complete the job and turn the page on this dark chapter.
