In the midst of a tough battle against Ebola in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), there's some seriously uplifting news! 🌟 Over the weekend, four brave patients—all of whom are nurses—were discharged from the hospital after successfully beating the virus.
This brings the total number of survivors to five, serving as a powerful reminder that early treatment is a game-changer and can absolutely save lives. 🏥✨
These healthcare heroes were treated in Bunia, the capital of Ituri Province, after contracting the virus while caring for others last month. The discharge ceremony was a big moment, attended by World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, who told the survivors, "You are living proof that this outbreak can be stopped."
But the journey wasn't easy. Nurse Etienne Ezo shared the raw emotions of the experience, describing the deep demoralization and the mental struggle of being in isolation. "If you have never been isolated, you will not know that it is not easy," he shared. 💔💪
While we celebrate these wins, the fight continues. Here is the current breakdown of the situation as reported by the WHO and Africa CDC:
- Confirmed Cases: 263 in the DR Congo and 9 in Uganda.
- Confirmed Deaths: 43 (42 in DRC and 1 in Uganda).
- Under Review: More than 1,100 suspected cases are still being investigated across both countries.
Healthcare workers remain on the frontlines, facing the highest risks to keep others safe. Let's send some love and support to the medical teams working tirelessly to stop the spread! 🌍❤️
