Armenia’s Balancing Act: Staying in EAEU While Eyeing the EU 🇦🇲

Armenia is currently playing a high-stakes game of diplomatic balance! 🌍 Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan recently made it clear that while the world is talking about Armenia joining the European Union (EU), the country isn't planning to ghost the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) just yet.

In a social media video, Pashinyan told followers that Armenia will continue to work within the Russia-led EAEU "calmly and confidently." He suggested that the idea of having to choose one over the other is, for now, mostly theoretical. ✨

The Drama Behind the Decision 🎭
The tension spiked after a meeting of the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council on May 29. The presidents of Russia, Kazakhstan, Belarus, and Kyrgyzstan issued a joint statement basically asking Armenia to hold a referendum to decide: do you want the EU or the EAEU? 🗳️

Pashinyan, however, wasn't having it. He rejected the proposal, calling it "illogical and unjustified" to hold a vote before Armenia has even formally applied for EU membership or reached candidate status.

A Complicated Relationship 🇷🇺
Things aren't exactly smooth sailing, though. On May 30, Russia's Foreign Ministry recalled its ambassador to Armenia for consultations. Moscow is worried that Armenia is getting a bit too cozy with the EU, claiming these moves undermine the EAEU cooperation. 😬

Despite the friction, Pashinyan is optimistic, describing the bilateral ties with Russia as being in a "positive period of transformation." He believes that building new relations under current circumstances will eventually succeed.

The Bigger Picture 🇪🇺
This isn't just talk. Armenia has been making real moves toward Europe. Back on April 4, 2025, President Vahagn Khachaturyan signed a law officially launching the process for Armenia to join the EU. 📜

So, can Armenia keep a foot in both camps? Only time will tell, but for now, they're sticking to their "calm and confident" strategy. 💬✨
